The Unseen Army of Truth, How to Find Protection in the Dharma

by Kooi F. Lim, The Buddhist Channel, 5 Oct 2023

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia -- In the tapestry of life, we all seek protection from the uncertainties and challenges that constantly surround us. Buddhism offers a unique perspective on protection, one that does not rely on physical fortifications, but rather on the strength of one's inner being. This inner fortress is guarded by what can be aptly termed the Unseen Army of Truth.

Comprising elements of Dharma such as the paramis (perfections), factors of enlightenment and positive karma, this invisible force serves as a shield against harm and enables us to live a life of fearlessness. In this essay, we will delve into the profound teachings of Buddhism to explore how these elements come together to offer us spiritual protection and empower us to face the world with courage.

The Paramis: Foundations of Spiritual Protection

The paramis, or perfections, are virtues that form the bedrock of Buddhist practice. They are qualities that, when cultivated, fortify the individual against suffering and provide a solid foundation for the spiritual journey. The paramis include generosity, moral virtue, renunciation, wisdom, effort, patience, truthfulness, determination, loving-kindness and equanimity. These virtues serve as a protective shield against the negative forces of greed, hatred and delusion.

Generosity, for instance, not only benefits others but also protects the giver from the shackles of attachment to material possessions. When one practices generosity, they release the grip of greed on their heart, finding freedom from the relentless pursuit of worldly possessions. In this way, generosity serves as a protective force, preserving our inner peace and happiness.

Moral virtue, another parami, acts as a shield against the harm caused by unethical actions. By living a life of integrity, one creates a protective boundary against the karmic consequences of harmful deeds. It is through moral virtue that we safeguard ourselves from the suffering that arises from a guilty conscience.

Renunciation, the willingness to let go of worldly attachments, serves as protection against the incessant desires that often torment the human mind. By relinquishing our attachment to transient pleasures, we find the freedom to navigate life without being enslaved by our cravings.

Factors of Enlightenment, Illuminating the Path

The factors of enlightenment, also known as the bojjhangas, are another crucial element in the Unseen Army of the Truth. These factors, which include mindfulness, investigation of phenomena, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration and equanimity, provide the light that guides us through the darkness of ignorance and confusion.

Mindfulness, the first of the bojjhangas, acts as a sentinel, guarding our mind against the intrusion of unwholesome thoughts and emotions. It enables us to see things as they are, without distortion or bias, allowing us to make wise choices and avoid harm.

Investigation of phenomena encourages us to inquire deeply into the nature of reality, leading us to a profound understanding of the impermanence and inter-connectedness of all things. This wisdom acts as a protective barrier against delusion, dispelling the fog of ignorance that shrouds our perception.

Energy and joy infuse us with the strength and resilience needed to confront life's challenges. They are like an inner armor that shields us from the weariness and despondency that can hinder our spiritual progress.

Tranquility and concentration offer a sanctuary of calm amidst the chaos of life. They protect us from the storms of agitation and distraction, allowing us to cultivate a focused and serene mind.

Equanimity, the culmination of the factors of enlightenment, is the ultimate protector against the fluctuations of worldly existence. It bestows upon us a profound sense of balance and acceptance, enabling us to face both pleasure and pain with unwavering composure.

Positive Karma, the Invisible Guardian

Positive karma, the result of wholesome actions, is the third pillar of the Unseen Army of the Truth. Karma is the universal law of cause and effect, and it operates whether we are aware of it or not. When we engage in actions rooted in generosity, compassion, and moral virtue, we create positive karmic imprints that serve as a protective shield.

Positive karma is like a silent guardian that watches over us, ensuring that we reap the benefits of our virtuous actions and mitigating the consequences of unwholesome deeds. It is the force that brings us into contact with supportive people and favorable circumstances, and it can act as a buffer against the adversities of life.

Fearlessness Through the Unseen Army

When we harness the power of the paramis, the factors of enlightenment and positive karma, we become beneficiaries of the Unseen Army of the Truth. This invisible force protects us not by shielding us from external threats but by fortifying our inner being. It empowers us to face life's challenges with fearlessness and equanimity.

In the face of adversity, we can draw upon the paramis to cultivate resilience and compassion. We can rely on the factors of enlightenment to navigate the complexities of existence with wisdom and clarity. And we can trust in positive karma to guide us toward a life of purpose and fulfillment.

In the journey of life, we are constantly seeking protection and security. Buddhism offers a profound and transformative perspective on this quest through the concept of the Unseen Army of the Truth. By cultivating the paramis, embracing the factors of enlightenment, and generating positive karma, we create a formidable fortress within ourselves. This inner stronghold shields us from harm and empowers us to live a life of fearlessness.

As we continue to explore the depths of the Dharma and embody its teachings, we discover that true protection is not found in external fortifications but in the strength of our inner virtues, wisdom and positive actions. The Unseen Army of the Truth stands as an enduring testament to the power of the human spirit to transcend suffering and find lasting peace in the embrace of the Dharma.
