Tsunami brings Thai Buddhist shrine to Sri Lankan coast

ColomboPage News Desk, January 27, 2005

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- A Buddhist shrine made of wood, believed to have originated in Thailand, was found on the Vakarai beach yesterday.

Sources said the shrine appears to have drifted across the Bay of Bengal from Thailand after the December 26 tsunamis. The statue in the shrine is missing.

Sources also said there was no damage to the shrine, although it had apparently floated for a month across the sea.
