An excellent and informative article, ”Inland Fisheries and Buddhism,” published on the Buddhist Channel on April 12, 2014, discourages Buddhist participation in raising animals for food at Sri Lanka’s inland fisheries, fishing, and eating animal flesh.  A letter written in reply by NS entitled “Buddha allowed consumption of meat as long as it is not for lust” appeared on the Buddhist Channel website on April 20, 2014, and takes the position that the Buddha approved the raising of fish for food, fishing, and eating fish.

What exactly are we Buddhists supposed to make of the sort of book and comments produced by the likes of David Barash (David Barash explores science, religion and meaning of life in ‘Buddhist Biology’)? Are we expected to take the qualified approval of Buddhism by someone who, despite expertise in some areas of Western science, has no expert knowledge or real experience of Buddhism, as some sort of demonstration that Buddhism is really OK for us westerners?

Please help monk beaten up by teenagers

I don't generally ask others to give to causes I think of as worthy, but I am willing to break with tradition on behalf of the Buddhist monk, Weera "Tony" Chulsuwan, a 66-year-old from Spencer, Oklahoma, who stepped out of his front door a week ago Friday and was beaten, literally, within an inch of his life by two boys, 14 and 15 -- kids whom Chulsuwan had known until that moment as neighbors.
