Sri Lanka Buddhist monks ask for driving license rights

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- A Buddhist monk filed a petition at the Sri Lanka Supreme Court this morning against the government's decision of preventing the monks from obtaining driving licenses.

Ven. Paragoda Wimalawansha, the chief incumbent of the Sri Shakymuni temple in Waskaduwa, Panadura has filed this petition naming Motor Traffic Commissioner, the Commissioner of Buddhist Activities and several others as the respondents.

In this petition Ven. Paragoda Wimalawansha thero said the Commissioner of Buddhist Activities through a special circular has prevented the monks from obtaining driving licenses.

The three-judge Supreme Court bench is to announce its final verdict over this petition on a later date.
