New global Buddhist body

Bangkok Post, May 12, 2007

Bangkok, Thailand -- Buddhists and their religious leaders worldwide are due to set up the World Buddhist University Association, the first of its kind, on Visakha Bucha Day at the end of the month.

Phra Thamma Kosajarn, rector of Maha Chulalongkorn Rajavidyalaya University, said Buddhist leaders from various countries who will participate in World Visakha Bucha Day celebrations will sign an agreement to set up the association.

He did not disclose the location of the association.

He said the body would coordinate with member countries and provide them assistance in religious education management.

Buddhist scholars would also be sent to member countries under the association to help spread the religion.

Since Thailand has played host to World Visakha Bucha Day celebrations for two consecutive years, there have been constructive changes among Buddhists from several countries and different sects, the senior monk said.
