Central Vietnam Buddhist Sangha holds 5th congress

Hanoi, Vietnam -- The Buddhist Sangha from central Vietnam’s Thua Thien-Hue province convened its 5th congress Saturday and reelected its leader.

The congress elected its new 47-member executive board for the 5th term (2007-2012) with the Most Venerable Thich Duc Phuong reelected as its head.

The meeting also reviewed the Sangha’s 4th term and set plans for the next term.

The provincial Buddhist Sangha has made great efforts to consolidate its organization and increase solidarity among local Buddhist followers over the past five years, the two-day meeting reported.

The group has also upgraded many pagodas and monasteries in the province, which boasts seven famous pagodas classified as national historical sites - Thien Mu, Dieu De, Thanh Duyen, Hien Luong, Ha Trung, Thanh Quang and An Khanh.
