SINGAPORE -- More than 11,000 elderly folks got an early Lunar New Year hong bao on Saturday morning. And they received them from none other than President SR Nathan himself.
This is the 59th year that the Singapore Buddhist Lodge is giving away hong baos for the needy.
Each of the recipients will get between S$10 and S$100, which means more than S$373,000 were given away this year.
It is also the largest amount the Buddhist Lodge has ever given in the yearly tradition.
In all, more than S$10 million have been given away since 1949.
Two charitable organisations Hougang NKF Dialysis Centre and the Compass Welfare Foundation also received a combined donation of S$400,000 from the Buddhist Lodge.
