Dalai Lama plans Indiana visit

Bloomington, Indiana (USA) -- More than $1.5 million in debt will be paid in full by the time the Dalai Lama visits Indianapolis in October, local organizers said today.

During a press conference in Bloomington, Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp, a top model who’s married to Indiana rock legend John Mellencamp, said the Dalai Lama will definitely do a public lecture in Indianapolis during his visit. He will also do several Buddhist teachings in Bloomington during his Oct. 23-28 trip.

The debt is for the Tibetan Cultural Center in Bloomington. Mellencamp said the debt will be paid in full, but she did not explain how that would be done.

This will be the Dalai Lama’s fifth visit to Bloomington, where his elder brother, Thubten Jigme Norbu, founded the center in 1979 while a professor at Indiana University.
