THIMPHU, Bhutan -- The Global Peace Prayer Festival began on November 4 at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu. The event is a 13-day international spiritual gathering that will continue until November 17.
The opening ceremony was attended by Bhutan's King and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. The festival brings together Buddhist leaders, practitioners, and peace advocates.
On the second day, the Jabzhi Dhoechog ritual is being conducted at Kuenselphodrang, also known as Buddha Point. This ceremony is dedicated to global peace and happiness. It combines peaceful offerings with wrathful protection rituals. The purpose is to heal, cleanse, and purify the body, speech, and mind of negative karma.
Simultaneously, a seven-day non-sectarian Vajrayana Buddhist prayer is being held at the Changlimithang Ground. These prayers represent all schools and traditions of Buddhism.
The festival is organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan. It includes sacred rituals, a non-sectarian Global Peace Prayer, the mass recitation of Bazaguru, public blessings, and the Kalachakra Empowerment. Participants include lamas, scholars, and practitioners from Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana traditions.
At the Changlimithang Ground, representatives from various Buddhist sects will join in a unified Global Peace Prayer. Prayers for world peace will be offered in multiple languages, including English, Tibetan, and Dzongkha. Simultaneous translations will be provided during teachings and empowerments.
His Holiness the Je Khenpo will preside over the Kalachakra Initiation and Empowerment. This teaching will cover the connection between individuals and the universe, and the Buddha nature present in all beings.
The festival will also host the Bhikkhuni Ordination, or Gelongma Ordination. Over 250 Buddhist nuns from across the world will be ordained by His Holiness the Je Khenpo. The ordination will take place at the Training and Resource Centre of the Bhutan Nuns Foundation in Tshalumaphey, Thimphu. This is the second ordination of this kind organized by the Bhutan Nuns Foundation for Mahayana Buddhist nuns.
An exhibition of Kalachakra art and artefacts will be presented during the festival. Scholarly seminars on the Kalachakra tradition will also be held.
