Statement on the Continuation of the Institution of Dalai Lama: A Light for Our Times

by Tenzin Orkay, The Buddhist Channel, 5 July 2025

The Buddhist Channel wishes His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso Happy 90th Continuation Day. May His Holiness continue to guide us on the path towards Spiritual Freedom and Enlightenment!

Dharmsala, India -- On July 2, 2025, the 14th Dalai Lama shared a heartfelt announcement that felt like a warm embrace to Tibetan Buddhists and admirers worldwide: the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue.

For those of us who have followed His Holiness’s journey, this wasn’t just a policy statement — it was a moment of profound reassurance, a promise that the compassion and wisdom he embodies will carry on.

I remember sitting in a small café in Dharamsala years ago, listening to monks debate the future of the Dalai Lama’s role over steaming cups of butter tea. Even then, the question of whether the institution should continue sparked intense discussion. His Holiness himself has been pondering this for decades, as far back as 1969, when he first invited the Tibetan people to weigh in.

In 2011, he doubled down, saying that around age ninety, he’d consult high lamas, the Tibetan public, and Buddhist followers to decide the institution’s fate. Now, at ninety, he’s listened to the voices calling out — from Tibet’s heartland to the Himalayan foothills, from Mongolia to Buddhist communities in Russia and mainland China. Their message was clear: the Dalai Lama’s legacy must endure.

What struck me most about this announcement was its deep sense of connection to the people. Tibetans in exile, community leaders, NGOs, and even those living under constraints in Tibet sent messages through every possible channel, pleading for the institution to continue. It’s a reminder of how much the Dalai Lama means — not just as a spiritual leader, but as a symbol of hope for a people navigating a complex and often painful reality.

His decision to affirm the institution’s future feels like an act of love, a commitment to stand by his community.

The announcement also lays out a clear path forward. The Gaden Phodrang Trust, the Dalai Lama’s office, holds sole authority to recognize the next reincarnation, guided by high lamas and sacred Dharma Protectors tied to the Dalai Lama lineage. This isn’t just logistics — it’s a bold statement of sovereignty. By rooting the process in tradition and shielding it from outside interference, His Holiness ensures that the next Dalai Lama will emerge from the heart of Tibetan Buddhism, not from political agendas.

For me, and I suspect for many readers of this news portal, the Dalai Lama is more than a figurehead. His teachings — on kindness, on finding common ground across faiths, on caring for our planet — have shaped how we all try to live. Whether it’s his infectious laugh during a talk or his quiet resolve when speaking about Tibet’s struggles, he has a way of making the dharma feel alive and urgent. The continuation of his institution means that this spirit, this way of being, won’t fade away.

But there’s also something beautifully human in how His Holiness has approached this decision. He didn’t dictate the future from on high. Instead, he opened the door to dialogue, inviting Tibetans and Buddhists everywhere to have a say.

It’s a reminder that even sacred traditions can evolve, guided by the voices of those they serve. As he nears his ninetieth year, his willingness to listen feels like a final lesson in humility.

As a Buddhist, I feel a quiet joy knowing that the Dalai Lama’s light will shine on through future incarnations. As a person, I’m inspired to live up to the values he’s championed — compassion, resilience, and a stubborn belief in the goodness of humanity. For Tibetans, this announcement is a lifeline, a thread connecting past, present, and future. For all of us, it’s a call to carry forward the Dalai Lama’s message in our own lives, wherever we are.

Let’s honor this moment by supporting the Gaden Phodrang Trust in its sacred work and by keeping the Dalai Lama’s teachings close to our hearts. His legacy isn’t just in the institution - it’s in every act of kindness we choose to share with the world.
