Jakarta, Indonesia -- The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has established 49 Dhammasekha schools across the country, according to Supriyadi, Director General of Buddhist Community Development. The announcement was made during a ceremony marking the 19th anniversary of the Directorate General of Buddhist Community Development on Monday.
The Dhammasekha schools, which focus on formal Buddhist education, are divided into four educational levels: Nava Dhammasekha (early childhood education), Mula Dhammasekha (elementary school), Muda Dhammasekha (junior high school), and Uttama Dhammasekha (vocational high school).
“These schools have been set up to meet the educational needs of the Buddhist community and to provide quality education,” Supriyadi stated. Out of the 49 schools, 19 are currently undergoing accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education.
Supriyadi emphasized that the Directorate General of Buddhist Community Development aims to integrate Buddhist education into the national education framework to cultivate highly skilled and knowledgeable human resources, aligned with the teachings of the Buddha. "We continue to invite partners from various sectors to collaborate in improving the quality of education,” he added.
Supriyadi further expressed hopes that the Dhammasekha schools will help foster a deep understanding of Buddhist teachings among students. He called for collective support to ensure the success of the Dhammasekha program as a top priority for the Directorate General.
In addition to the establishment of new schools, Supriyadi highlighted other key achievements of the Directorate General, including the launch of the Braille version of the *Dhammapada* for visually impaired Buddhists and the creation of the *belajarbuddha.id* learning management system to enhance independent learning for religious education.
Meanwhile, Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas expressed his aspiration for Dhammasekha schools to become prominent educational institutions in Indonesia, akin to the prestigious State Islamic Senior High School Insan Cendekia (MAN IC) in South Tangerang, Banten.
“Dhammasekhas should strive to match the success of MAN IC, which ranks as the best senior high school in the country. I hope to see a Buddhist school emerge as a top educational institution, similar to MAN IC,” Minister Qoumas remarked during the inauguration of a new Dhammasekha school in Jakarta on Friday.
The minister also noted that educational services are a priority for the Religious Affairs Ministry, alongside religious affairs.
Qoumas stressed the importance of providing support for both public and private Dhammasekha schools, urging the Directorate General to ensure that all schools, regardless of ownership, receive the attention and resources necessary for their development.
“We must take affirmative action to support the growth of Dhammasekha schools, both public and private, to ensure they have the opportunities they need to thrive,” he concluded.
The Religious Affairs Ministry’s commitment to expanding access to Buddhist education marks a significant step in fostering religious diversity and improving educational outcomes for Buddhist communities across Indonesia.
