A Tribute to a Visionary Leader

The event served as a powerful reminder of Venerable Master Hui Hai’s lifelong dedication to Buddhism, charity, and education. Born as a beacon of compassion and wisdom, Master Hui Hai founded Dharma Light Monastery, Dharma Buddhist University, and the Eco Monastery, embedding Buddhist teachings deeply into Malaysian society.

His modern approach to Buddhism emphasized cultural development, education, and charitable initiatives, earning him international accolades such as the Sun Yat Sen Spirit Award and the Global Outstanding Buddhist Leader Award.

Ven. Man Ben, Chief Executive Officer of the office of the Patriarch of Dharma Light Monastery, reflected on Master Hui Hai’s legacy in her speech: "He was a paragon of patriotism and Dharma protection, a guiding master for the Buddhist faith, and a model of the unity of knowledge and action." She highlighted his motto, "burning oneself to illuminate others," which inspired countless lives through selfless service and unwavering devotion.

The Inauguration of the Patriarch Hall

The centerpiece of the event was the inauguration of the Patriarch Hall on April 26, a historic moment witnessed by over 1,000 attendees. The hall stands as a tribute to Buddhist patriarchs and a testament to Master Hui Hai’s contributions to Buddhism. Designed with inspiration from the Song Dynasty’s iconic temple architecture, the hall features intricate details in its roof, doors, and windows, reflecting the artistic and spiritual achievements of that era.

The ceremony was led by revered monks, including Ven. Zhen An, who unveiled the hall’s curtain, and Chief Ven. Saranankara, Ven. Ci Guang, and Ven. Man Ben, who conducted the unlocking ritual. A solemn purification ceremony followed, with monks and devotees carrying relics of the patriarchs into the hall amidst offerings, banners, and flags. The atmosphere was one of profound reverence, as devotees knelt along the pathway, welcoming the relics with heartfelt devotion.

A Night of Illumination

As dusk fell on the first day, the monastery transformed into a sea of light, with 30,000 lamps illuminating the mountainside. Venerable monks passed flames to attendees, symbolizing the transmission of wisdom and the dispelling of darkness. The lighting ceremony was accompanied by continuous chants of the Buddha’s name, creating a meditative and uplifting ambiance.

An overnight sutra recitation, blending Theravāda and Mahāyāna traditions, followed the lighting ceremony. Monastics and devotees recited sutras dedicated to Bodhisattva Maitreya until dawn, uniting their aspirations for peace and enlightenment. The Hui Hai Foundation extended this symbolic light to Myanmar and other regions, hoping to spread hope and compassion worldwide.

Forum Discussions and Dharma Talks

The event also featured insightful forums and Dharma talks. Theravāda Chief Venerable Saranankara delivered a keynote address titled "The Infinite Depth of the Buddha’s Heart," emphasizing the Buddha’s teachings as a guiding light through life’s challenges. Other speakers focused on integrating Buddhist principles into daily life through acts of kindness, cultural preservation, and education.

Honouring Lifelong Dedication

In alignment with Master Hui Hai’s spirit of selfless service, the Hui Hai Charity Organisation presented the Tumbler Spirit Life Award to Ven. Fa Hang and Professor Ananda Ma. Both recipients were recognized for their unwavering commitment to Buddhism and their resilience in spreading the Dharma despite challenges.

A Harmonious Almsgiving Ceremony

The event concluded with a majestic almsgiving ceremony on April 27. Nearly 60 monastics walked barefoot along a red carpet, harmonizing Theravāda and Mahāyāna traditions. Devotees from across Malaysia participated with joy, including those with mobility challenges, demonstrating their deep faith and dedication.

A Legacy Continues

The "Hui Hai Yun Lai Ji" event was more than a commemoration; it was a reaffirmation of Master Hui Hai’s vision for a compassionate and enlightened world. As the Patriarch Hall now stands as a symbol of inspiration, devotees are encouraged to follow the patriarchs’ footsteps, advancing on the path of spiritual cultivation with determination and resilience.

Under the blessings of the patriarchs, the Dharma Light Monastery continues to shine as a beacon of orthodox Buddhism, fostering unity, wisdom, and compassion for generations to come.
