Faith should be mixed in all we do, including politics

by Visakha Kawasaki, Kandy, Sri Lanka, The Buddhist Channel, Nov 24, 2005

I cannot agree with Eric from Missoula that Buddhist faith should not mix with politics.  Faith and practice should be mixed in all that we do, and that includes the political in this world.

Shouldn't it be of great concern to us as Buddhists than this war, begun with lies, fed with hatred, and encouraged by willful ignorance is causing horrific and unnecessary suffering and death? If we don't feel compassion for those whose lives are being lost or irrevocably ruined, then what does compassion mean?

Lord Buddha managed to prevent a war with his wise words. As his sons and daughters our words and our actions should aim to promote peace.

Sadhu! Sadhu!! Sadhu!!! to those courageous Buddhists who were willing to take a stand against the war in Iraq.

The large gap that Eric sees in the US may well be real, and pretending it isn't there won't make it go away.
