A space for Buddha's vision of peace in China

by Ian Arbuckle, Aveiro PORTUGAL, The Buddhist Channel, April 17, 2006

I am in the opinion that the First World Buddhist Forum held in Hangzhou and approved by the Chinese authorities is a great step forward for peace and harmony in spite of HH the Dalai Lama not being invited.

“If a hundred people sleep and dream, each of them will experience a different world in his dream. Everyone’s dream might be said to be true, but it would be meaningless to ascertain that only one person’s dream was the true world and all others were fallacies. There is truth for each perceiver according to the karmic patterns conditioning his perceptions.” - Kalu Rinpoche

Future dreams will be made from the vast empty spiritual spaces left by man’s limited artifice. China and the world has now to cater to the dreams and hopes of billions and as pointed out in the letter to the conference from the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan “Buddha's vision of peace may be more relevant than ever before.”

The effect of awareness of this very old vision as well as today’s prayers for peace, harmony and healing can give us all hope for the future; a future which realizes the self defeating negativity of grasping; a future conceived in compassion and that accepts the inevitability of change.

China has embarked on a radical path of change in the last years and this is only another step. It would be difficult to imagine all the diversities, political and institutional, harmonized at once, given the history of severe conflict and bitterness.
