Derry Buddhist says he will pray for Tibetan monks

Journal Tuesday Derry Edit, March 25, 2008

Derry, UK -- A Derry-based Buddist monk says he is deeply concerned for the safety of monks in Tibet after reports of a Chinese military build up in the area.
Lobsang Wangchuk, who lives in Derry and holds meditation classes here, says he has been praying for the safety of the Dalai Lama and his monks.

The Derry-based monk has just returned from Dharamsala, the residence of the Dalai Lama, where monks have been protesting peacefully about the situation in Tibet.

“I am very concerned about what is happening in Tibet and I pray for them daily,” he told the ‘Journal’. “ I have just returned from Dharamsala where there are 4,000 monks and where the Dalai Lama lives in exile. I was there to hear his teaching and it has been clear that the Dalai Lama has been using stronger words recently,” he said.

Mr Wangchuk says he is also praying for westerners caught up in the disturbances. “There have been quite few westerners who have not been allowed to proceed with their travels and have been trapped at the borders.”

The Derry Buddhist - speaking after the secretary of the Communist party in Tibet referred to the Buddhist’s spiritual leader as “a wolf in monk’s clothing - insisted that verbal attacks on the Dalai Lama would have no impact.

“The Dalai Lama and his followers are used to such attacks,” he says.
