Buddhist light lamps in memory of deceased kin

KATHMANDU, Nepal -- The festival of lighting lamps at Bouddha Stupa by Buddhists on the day of Chaitra Shukla Purnima in memory of their deceased relatives concluded on Monday.

Buddhist devotees spend a wakeful night on Sunday in memory of their deceased relatives, said Joint Secretary of Bouddha Ghyang Guthi Kiran Kumar Lama. The Buddhist community call this festival ‘Dwang Molam’.

The festival concluded after today’s dusk as the devotees, who spend the sleepless night, went to Baishdhara of Balaju and took a holy bath, said Executive Director of Bouddhanath Area Development Committee Chiring Dorje Lama.

Similarly, the festival also saw a fair of Timal Jatra at Bouddha Stupa that started from Sunday. Those who couldn’t stay awoke last night lit lamps in the day, said a Buddhist writer, Sampurna Kumar Lama. It is estimated that more than 100,000 Buddhist devotees took part in the fair.
