Stefano Boeri Architetti Unveils Master Plan for Ramagrama Stupa in Nepal
The Buddhist Channel, 19 December 2023
Kathmandu, Nepal -- Stefano Boeri Architetti recently disclosed the master plan for the Ramagrama Stupa in Nepal, introducing a design aimed at enhancing the revered Buddhist location.
The proposal includes a Biodiversity "Ring Garden" and a Peace Meadow encircling the Bodhi tree, situated in Nepal's Parasi district. The Ramagrama municipality holds significant cultural and religious importance, preserving a segment of Buddha's relics.
While commonly associated with elaborate structures like churches and temples, some sacred sites are simple mounds and trees, holding historical and spiritual value. Buddhism, for instance, embraces such unadorned locations, with the Ramagrama Stupa being a prime example—an ancient site in Nepal's Parasi district dating back to Buddhism's earliest era, featuring the iconic Bodhi Tree at its center.
To enhance this historical and religious site, Stefano Boeri Architetti proposed a master plan for the Ramagrama Stupa. The design revolves around creating a meaningful center for prayer, meditation, and peace, respecting the rich symbolism found in Buddhist scriptures.
The proposed Biodiversity Garden Ring surrounds the Stupa, housing 80,000 plants of 70 different species on a sloping area. This ring, along with the Peace Meadow, serves as a gathering and meditation space for monks, pilgrims, and visitors approaching the Bodhi Tree and the Stupa.
The entire design is shaped to respect local environmental conditions and maintain usability throughout the year, aligning with architectural traditions and minimizing environmental impact through the use of locally sourced materials.
The master plan for the Ramagrama Stupa is an ambitious project that harmoniously combines various elements representing Buddhism in architectural design and landscaping.
The minimalist structures and circular paths offer spaces for contemplation, prayer, and admiration. With a focus on biodiversity, the design pays homage to the Bodhi tree, symbolizing biodiversity within Buddhism, ensuring the botanical legacy endures for generations.
This project holds universal value and collaborative potential across cultures and nations, making it one of the most significant ongoing cultural heritage endeavors in Nepal.
As a space rooted in the earth yet exuding an air of mysticism and wonder, the Ramagrama Stupa's design aligns with the principles of Buddhism, providing visitors with a unique environment for reflection and spiritual connection.
