Nepal: Buddhist Gumba, Madarsa education to enter mainstream

The Rising Nepal, April 3, 2005

KATHMANDU, Nepal -- A directive to mainstream the Gumba (Monastery) and Madarsa (Mosque) education into formal school system designed up to SLC (School Leaving Certificate) is waiting for a nod from the cabinet.

?Realising the need to formalise the monastery and mosque education into the national system, the draft of the directive has been forwarded to the Council of Ministers and it is likely to be approved soon,? said Janardan Nepal, director general at the Department of Education (DoE).

The monastery, belonged to Buddhism, and Madarsa, related to Islam, schools have been running in the country for many years but away from the mainstream and national curricula and without registration with the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES).

According to the MoES, such primary schools will be called on to register at the DoE and the lower secondary and secondary levels will have to be registered at the Regional Education Directorates.

After the registration of those schools, we will develop modified syllabuses for them by including both their traditional as well as the national curricula, said Jagannath Awa, executive director at the Curriculum Development Centre.
