Ratnagiri, Jajpur (India) -- The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has uncovered an ancient Buddhist complex at Ratnagiri, Jajpur district, marking a renewed chapter in the site’s rich 1,200-year-old history.

The excavation has revealed a treasure trove of artifacts, including stone images of Lord Buddha, an ancient brick wall, votive stupas, pottery, inscribed stones, beads, and stone pillars. This discovery, made six decades after the first extensive exploration of Ratnagiri, underscores the site’s enduring historical and cultural importance.

Dr. Sunil Patnaik, secretary of the Odisha Institute of Maritime and South East Asian Studies (OIMSEAS), highlighted the significance of the findings. “The unearthed Buddhist monastery dates back to the 8th century AD and was constructed under the patronage of the Bhaumakara dynasty, which flourished in ancient Odisha between the 8th and 11th centuries. The Buddha images found here feature unique hairstyles not seen in other parts of India, adding to the site’s distinctiveness,” he explained.

The excavation is a collaborative endeavor, involving ASI and the history departments of Cotton University in Guwahati, Sambalpur University, and Utkal University. According to ASI Assistant Superintendent Prajnya Pratin Pradhan, these efforts aim to deepen understanding of Buddhism’s historical and cultural legacy in Odisha.

Ratnagiri, often referred to as the “Hill of Jewels,” was first documented in 1905 by Manmohan Chakravarty, a sub-divisional officer in Jajpur. Initial excavations between 1958 and 1961 uncovered extensive Buddhist establishments, including a brick stupa, three monastic complexes, eight temples, and over 700 votive stupas.

Despite its historical significance, the site faces challenges. Encroachment by local villagers has complicated conservation efforts. “Many villagers have constructed buildings on parts of the Buddhist site, hampering preservation work,” said Tapan Pati, a former history professor at Kendrapada Autonomous College. He urged government intervention to safeguard this invaluable repository of Buddhist art, architecture, and learning.

The recent discoveries not only highlight the grandeur of ancient Odisha but also shed light on Ratnagiri’s role as a pivotal center of Buddhism in the region. As the excavation continues, historians and archaeologists anticipate uncovering further insights into the spiritual and cultural legacy of Ratnagiri.

This rediscovery serves as a reminder of the site’s enduring importance, inspiring renewed efforts to protect and celebrate its rich heritage.
