12th Convention of Rakhine Buddhist Welfare Association held in Bangladesh

Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh -- A two-day convention of the Rakhine Buddhist Welfare Association was held from 27th to 28th March, 2009, in the conference hall of its head office in Cox's Bazaar, a southern coastal town with a large Rakhine population in Bangladesh.

More than 400 people including MPs and government officials attended the convention that was held to reform the central executive committee of the organization.

RBWA is a leading social organization for Rakhine people in Bangladesh and it is comprised of twenty-one local branches that operate in areas with Rakhine populations.

A seventeen-member central committee was formed with elected members during the convention. U Kyaw Thein (U Rhee) was re-elected as president while U Maung Thein Hla was elected as the general secretary of the organization, according to participants.

RBWA is an officially registered organization striving for the development of education, socio-culture, and religion of Rakhine communities in Bangladesh.

The organization was established in 1989 and at the latest convention they vowed to extend their activities into housing plans and micro-credit for poor Rakhine people.
