Tibetans celebrate end of auspicious month

TOI, Jun 16, 2011

BERHAMPUR, India -- Tibetans in the state performed special rituals on Wednesday celebrating the end of the most auspicious month of the Buddhist calendar.

They observed fast and maintained silence throughout the day to appease Lord Buddha. Many of them gathered at the famous Buddhist monastery at Jiranga to celebrate the occasion.

"We consider this month sacred as Lord Buddha was born in this month. He also attained Nirvana in this month. We celebrate the end of the month with special rituals," said the chairman of the local Tibetan assembly, Khenpo Pema.

About 4500 Tibetans live in the five camps at Chandragiri, Takillipada, Labarsingh, Jiranga and Mahendragada in Gajapati district since 1964, when they left from their home land in Tibet along with their spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

"Around 230 monks, along with settlers from all the camps performed special rituals and prayed for world peace, led by Gyetrul Jigmey Rinpoche, the main monk of the monastery at Jiranga," Pema, who is also the in-charge of the monastery, said.

They perform the special ritual without uttering a word or taking food or water, he added.
