State seeks JBIC help to develop Buddhist sites

Newindpress, May 11 2005

BHUBANESWAR, India -- The State Government has decided to seek financial assistance from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to develop three ancient Buddhist centres, Lalitgiri, Udaygiri and Ratnagiri.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday. A proposal in this regard will soon be submitted to the Centre.

The three centres have potential to attract tourists from all over the world particularly from countries which have a high Buddhist population.

Additional revenue can be generated and potential for employment can be created by developing these places as major tourist centres of the State.

Roads connecting the three places need to be widened and made travel friendly in all weathers. The Centre has already sanctioned Rs 8 crore for development of this circuit.
