Leh, Ladakh (India) -- The Ladakh Buddhist Association is advocating for the inclusion of Bhoti, a language spoken across the Himalayan region, in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. They argue Bhoti's Sanskrit script connects Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh, and its recognition is crucial.
The Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), established in 1934, is a socio-religious organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the interests of Buddhists in Ladakh. A significant aspect of their mission is the preservation and promotion of the Bhoti language, which holds cultural and historical importance in the region.
Bhoti, an extension of classical Tibetan, is spoken across the Himalayan region from Baltistan to Arunachal Pradesh. The LBA emphasizes that Bhoti's common Sanskrit script connects the Himalayan region from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh. Recognizing its significance, the LBA has been actively advocating for the inclusion of Bhoti in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would grant it official recognition and support.
In recent developments, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, during a meeting with representatives from Ladakh, assured them of declaring Urdu and Bhoti as official languages of the Union Territory. This assurance has bolstered the LBA's efforts to promote Bhoti.
To further their cause, the LBA has organized seminars and processions. For instance, a one-day seminar on the preservation and promotion of the Bhoti language was held at Chokhang Vihara in Leh, emphasizing its importance for developing the culture and tradition of Ladakh.
In a significant initiative to promote linguistic and educational enrichment, Ven Stanzin Nurbu from Nubra valley stands out for his pioneering efforts in promoting the rich heritage of the Bhoti Language.
Acknowledged and commended by the Ladakh Buddhist Association in Leh, he has spearheaded the creation of a suite of educational materials in Bhoti Language. His endeavor aimed not only to facilitate learning but also to kindle a profound interest in Bhoti Language among students and the broader society.
By independently developing and funding 14 diverse items, ranging from notebooks, notepads, charts, banners, stickers, horoscopes, and various teaching aids Ven Stanzin Nurbu aspires to widely propagate Bhoti language.
Through these initiatives, the LBA continues to play a pivotal role in preserving Ladakh's linguistic heritage, ensuring that the Bhoti language remains a vibrant and integral part of the region's cultural identity.
