India Renews Commitment to Buddhist Tourism

The Buddhist Channel, 26 Feb 2026

New Delhi, India -- The Department of Tourism India is embarking on an ambitious journey to elevate the country's status as a premier destination for Buddhist pilgrims and travelers. With a focus on historical sites, improved infrastructure, and global outreach, these efforts promise to make India more accessible and appealing to seekers of peace and wisdom from across the globe.

A Global Publicity Campaign to Attract International Pilgrims

Starting in May, the Department of Tourism will launch a comprehensive publicity campaign aimed at drawing pilgrims and tourists from key Buddhist nations. This initiative will highlight internationally significant sites, with the iconic Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya serving as a central hub for information dissemination. Visitors can learn about profound locations such as the ancient remains of Nalanda University and the serene World Peace Stupa in Rajgir.

The campaign will span 15 countries, including Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Japan, China, South Korea, and Mongolia. Through road shows, cultural programs, and digital campaigns, India aims to showcase its Buddhist treasures and foster stronger ties with these nations. To ensure a seamless experience for foreign visitors, enhancements are underway in Bodhgaya, including better accommodation options, improved transportation, and multilingual guides. Additionally, the government plans to bolster airport facilities and streamline visa processes, making it easier for international travelers to embark on their spiritual quests.

These measures are part of a broader strategy to boost the economy through religious tourism. By selecting a prestigious international agency for global branding and publicity, the Department of Tourism intends to position Bihar's historical, religious, and cultural sites on the world stage. Buddhist destinations will receive premier promotion via digital media, road shows, international tourism fairs, and cultural events, enhancing Bihar's image as a must-visit hub for spiritual exploration.

Developing Buddhist Circuits in the North-Eastern Region

Recognizing the untapped potential of spiritual tourism, the government has announced a new Scheme for the Development of Buddhist Circuits in the North-Eastern Region. This initiative targets the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura, home to numerous historically and spiritually significant Buddhist sites. The scheme focuses on strengthening tourism infrastructure to place the region firmly on the global Buddhist tourism map.

Key components include the development and conservation of temples and monasteries, the establishment of pilgrimage interpretation centers, improved connectivity to remote sites, and the creation of pilgrim amenities alongside heritage-related infrastructure. For instance, sites like the majestic Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh stand to gain from these upgrades, offering visitors enhanced access to breathtaking spiritual retreats amid the Himalayas.

This program is expected to attract both domestic and international pilgrims, promoting spiritual tourism while driving sustainable socio-economic development in the North-Eastern states. It builds on the successes of previous thematic tourism efforts, ensuring that growth aligns with conservation and community involvement.

Building on the Swadesh Darshan Legacy

The new scheme draws inspiration from the Ministry of Tourism's Swadesh Darshan Scheme, launched in 2014-15 to develop theme-based tourist circuits nationwide. This program emphasized quality infrastructure to improve accessibility, visitor amenities, and overall experiences. Evolving with tourism trends, it was revamped into Swadesh Darshan 2.0, prioritizing responsible tourism, heritage conservation, community participation, and local livelihood enhancement.

To date, 76 projects have been sanctioned under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, with a total approved cost of approximately $582 million USD. Impressively, 75 of these projects have been physically completed, demonstrating significant strides in bolstering India's tourism infrastructure.

A Bright Future for Buddhist Travel in India

India's Department of Tourism is not just preserving its Buddhist legacy but actively reinventing it for the modern traveler. These initiatives promise smoother journeys, deeper cultural immersions, and economic benefits that uplift local communities. For Buddhist enthusiasts, this means unprecedented opportunities to trace the footsteps of the Buddha in comfort and style. Whether you're planning a pilgrimage to Bodhgaya or an adventure in the North-East, India's evolving landscape invites you to discover enlightenment anew.
