India: Himachal draws up mega tourism projects

Shimla, India -- Himachal Pradesh has drawn up tourism projects worth Rs 970 million, which if cleared by the Centre, would help spruce up tourist sites like Chamba, Mandi, Bilaspur and other circuits, besides start a helicopter service and a toll-free helpline for holidaymakers.
Inaugurating a web-enabled hotel reservation facility developed by the state tourism development corporation here last evening, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said the proposal sent to the Centre also includes a project to upgrade civic infrastructure in the state.
He said the tourism potential available in the state was being exploited to the optimum, with public participation. Singh said his endeavour was to make tourism a household industry by associating every section of the society in its promotion.
The Chief Minister said that a Rs 72.3 million buddhist circuit programme was already under implementation in the state, besides a Rs 210 million tourism promotion project for Shimla and Kangra circuits.
A Rs 50 million project was under execution for the promotion of heritage tourism, which would be utilised for the renovation of the Naggar Castle and Chail Palace hotels in the state.
