Leh airport to be named after Kushok Bakula Rimpoche

NEW DELHI, India -- Leh airport would be renamed Kushok Bakula Rimpoche airport in memory of the Buddhist spiritual leader and the Head Lama of Ladakh.

A proposal of the Civil Aviation Ministry for renaming the airport after the Buddhist spiritual leader was approved on Friday by the Union Cabinet, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters here.

Mr. Bakula, known as the modern architect of Ladakh, has played a pivotal role in the economic development of the region. He was the first Member of Parliament elected from Ladakh in 1967.
