Monks take out colourful procession

Newindpress, January 12, 2006

AMARAVATI, Andhra Pradesh (India) -- Buddhist monks attending the Kalachakra Empowerment took out a colourful procession here today with their presiding deity Gyava Chamba.

The deity, regarded as the future Bodhisattva, was taken along the main streets. Buddhists in large numbers participated chanting hymns and blowing trumpets. Many monks were seen offering white cloths and cash to the deity.

The procession, which began in the early hours of the day, culminated at the preaching site where the deity was kept for public darshan. Thousands lined up to pay obeisance to the deity. People formed queues and offered cash to the deity.

There was a slight commotion when the Tibetan volunteers did not allow the locals to have darshan. After the intervention of the elder monks, the organisers allowed the public to have darshan.
