Amaravati all set to get a face-lift

Newindpress, January 16 2006

VIJAYAWADA, India -- Amaravati, one of the ancient holy towns in the country, will get a face-lift soon. Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy responded positively to the plea made by Dalai Lama in this regard. Dalai has been insisting on developing the village into an international Buddhist centre.

The Chief Minister has assured him that it will be soon developed as a major Buddhist destination. He also promised to start a regional tourism office in the town.

When Dalai Lama visited Amaravati in 1987, he said this place is very sacred for them.

?We read about the place in the books and finally came to know actual site of Amarvati now,? he observed.

After one and half decades, he agreed to give his Kalachakra Empowerment here.

Though Buddhism was born in Bihar, it was spread to other places throughout the world from here.

Though Amaravati is considered a Buddhist place, only this Kalachakra has made people to realise the historical importance of the site. Principal secretary endowments DC Rosaiah said now Amaravati has acquired international fame.

This is mostly due to the Buddha Stupa located here is the highest in the world.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) regional director Dr Jitendra Das said they will make efforts to preserve the Stupa. The Government is keen on developing Amaravati into an international ?Buddh Adarsh Matham?.

He also indicated that efforts were on to bring here some more marble remnants of Amaravati Stupa from Egmore Museum.
