UNI, March 2, 2006

Itanagar, India -- Chongkham, the circle headquarters of Lohit district in Arunachal Pradesh, seems to be in a riot of colours as the much awaited three-day mega tourism extravaganza Buddha Mahotsava is going to be celebrated here from March 13 next.

The festival aimed at projecting the immense tourism potentials and the Buddhists values of peace and non-violence, would also offer an opportunity to explore and know the diverse culture, scenic beauty and Hinayana Buddhist lifestyle of the Eastern part of the state.

The venue would offer a wide range of tourists' interests and activities including the world peace pagoda on a river island, Buddhist pagodas of Thai and Burmese architecture dotting almost every village in the lower belt with Khamptis and Singphos practicing Theravada Buddhism; Parasuram Kund-the famous pilgrimage site; the awesome scenic beauty of Dong-the place of first sunrise in the new millenium besides other attractions.

The highlights of the festival include spiritual events, display of traditional tribal life, traditional games and sports, food festival, elephant and boat safari, display of local arts and crafts, illuminating of floating lamp and offerings to sand pagoda.

This would be the fourth such event in the state in a row with two being organised at Tawang and one at Dirang respectively.
