The Buddhist suttas (verses from the Pali Tipitaka) were chanted by five Buddhist monks from Thailand. The head of the department, H.S. Pannu welcomed the guests and delegates.
After a brief introduction by visiting professor at the department of religious studies, Sanghasen Singh, Vice-Chancellor S.S. Boparai emphasised on the social aspects of religion.
He was of the view that no religion could survive, if it neglected those who were at the lowest rung of the social and economic ladder.
K.T.S. Sarao, professor and head of the Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Delhi, in his key-note address, traced the history of socially engaged Buddhism and made a detailed analysis of the forces that were working in different Buddhist countries.
