Relevance of Buddha’s teachings stressed

CHENNAI, India -- Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan on Saturday underscored the relevance of Lord Buddha’s teachings and listed the efforts made by the Tamil Nadu Government at creating greater awareness among youth.

At a function organised by the Information Department to mark 2,550 years of Lord Buddha’s enlightenment, he explained how Buddhism was misconstrued as a religion, and how Buddha strove to eliminate superstition among people.

He lauded the Information Department, led by Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, for conducting competitions for students on the significance of Lord Buddha.

Pattali Makkal Katchi president G.K. Mani, MLA, appealed to the State Government to include the life and teachings of Buddha in the curriculum.

Communist Party of India State secretary D. Pandian spoke about how Buddhism highlighted the importance of values in life.

Information Secretary D. Rajendran outlined the objectives of the celebrations.
