Ludhiana hosts Buddhist food festival

By Karan Kapoor, Daily India, July 5, 2007

Ludhiana, India -- A Buddhist food festival was recently organised at Ludhiana's Majestic Park Plaza. It was a purely and strictly "zhai cài", or the pure vegetarian fare cuisine.

Sabyasachi Chatterjee, the manager of the Majestic Park Plaza, said: "At an average, we do almost two-three food festivals in a month. At some point of time, you need something new, something creative which is not being held in any other joint, in India may be."

An attractive feature of the festival was the waiters dressed as monks, which left Punjabi visitors fascinated.

"It's good to bring different cultures to our society. We should know about different cultures which prevail in our country, which is very diverse and a mix of religions, ethnic groups, different societies, different people," Seema, a visitor said.

The use of Soya in some of the dishes provided some respite to those fond of non-vegetarian meals.

Nishant, another visitor said: "It's very different that we have all the Chinese dishes are in pure vegetarian form. Today, India and China, both are shining in terms of their respective economies. Food is also part of it. We are enjoying it".

Buddhist vegetarian chefs have become extremely creative in cloning meat using prepared Wheat gluten also known as `seitan', Soya, Agar and other plant products.

Buddhist cuisine is indeed a treat Punjabis will cherish for long time.
