Perturbed over the atrocities over Buddhist monks in Myanmar

JAMMU, India -- Perturbed over the atrocities over Buddhist monks in Myanmar (Burma), Lamas, along with other Buddhists in the trans-Himalayan Ladakh, staged a protest rally in Leh city on Tuesday, urging the Indian Government to use to rescue them.

The demonstration, which comprised members of Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA) and Ladakh Gompa Association (LGA), was flagged off by Skyabje Atak Rinpochey, a revered Lama of Ladakh region.

The procession started from Chowkhang and culminated near the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. The protesters urged the Government of India to put pressure on the military regime in Myanmar to end atrocities on monks.

LBA leader Sonam Dawa and LGA leader Lama Lobzang Angchuk expressed concern over the situation in Myanmar, asserting that Indian Government should use its diplomatic channels and the influence it has in South Asia to facilitate resolution of the crisis in Myanmar.

They said that peace-loving monks, who are spreading the message of peace and harmony all over the world, need safety, security and deserve due respect. They complained that even the monks in Ladakh are not safe as only recently two Liker monks have been killed. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, Leh, the LBA leaders said, “We strongly condemn the atrocities on Buddhist monks in Myanmar...The whole world has condemned the military atrocities on the monks.”
