Decks cleared for Buddha park

PATNA, India -- Decks have been cleared for setting up a Buddha Memorial Park, first of its kind in the state, at the prime location in the state capital. The total cost of the project is estimated to be approximately Rs 125 crore (US$ 28mil). It is likely to be completed in 2009.

The park will be located on the old Bankipore jail premises (now demolished) would be spread over in 22 acres, sources said.

The Bihar government will sign an MoU with IDFC — a Delhi-based consultant company — for setting up the park. Two presentation were made at a high level meeting held in New Delhi on Friday last in which several experts attended the meeting.

Bihar's urban development minister Ashwini Chaubey also participated in the meeting along with architect Vikram Lal, Nava Nalanda Mahavihara director Ravindra Panth besides Bihar urban development department secretary S Jaleja, Mahabodhi temple chief monk Bodhi Pal, Rajgir Buddha Vihar Society secretary Mahasweta Maharathi, Palash Srivastava of IDFC and Bihar resident commissioner in New Delhi C K Mishra among others.

"We hope that the final approval of the project would be cleared soon.

Only after approval of the project, an MoU would be signed. Tenders will be invited early next month," Chaubey told TOI. It would take nearly 440 days to complete the entire project after the tender notice, he said.

The main attraction of the park would be holy relic of Lord Buddha at the centre of the park. At present the relic is displayed here at the Patna museum.
