Adopt Pancha Sheela (five precepts) principle, Dalits told

Newindpress, January 16 2008

SOMWARPET, India -- Eradication of untouchability can be achieved only through transformation of people’s mindset, state Lokashikshana Department Commissioner K Shivaramu has said.

He was speaking after inaugurating ‘Towards Buddha: Back to Home’ programme organised as part of Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar’s 51st Parinirvana Day and golden jubilee year of accepting Buddhism at Yashasvi kalyana mantapa in Shanivarasanthe.

“Untouchability is still prevailing in the land of Gandhiji. Even after many years, the problems of Dalits are not yet solved,’’ he regretted. “We should show our respect to Dr Ambedkar by following his principles,’’ he added.

In his main address, Chinnaswamy said that the Dalits should live with self-respect. “They should leave the religion which does not give respect. Dalits should adopt Pancha Sheela principle of Buddhism in life.’’

Former ZP president H B Jayamma, ZP vice president Rajamma, Geetha Basappa and N S Rajarao also spoke. DSS state convener Lakshminarayana Nagavara presided. Tahsildar K M Suresh Kumar, DYSP M Narayan and others were present.
