Construction of Buddhist shrines in Tamil Naidu nearly complete

Tamil Naidu, India -- Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena MP calling on the Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake thera of Asgiriya yesterday said that the construction work of three Buddhist monasteries in South India were in progress.

The foundation stones for the monasteries were laid by the most Venerable Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero sometime ago at the invitation of Dr. Jayawardena.

The places of Buddhist worship were being built in Thirnthanthi, Trichchi and Thirukalvedi, Dr. Jayawardena said.

He told the Mahanayake Thero that Buddhist temples were put up in India for the first time after Ven. Anagarika Dharmapala. The new project was mainly funded by some wealthy Hindu donors.

Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Mahanayake Thero praising the efforts of Dr. Jayawardena said that building places of Buddhist worship in South India would help bridge closer relationship between Sri Lanka and Thamilnadu.
