Roads being repaired for Budhha Mahotsav

Zee News, Nov 3, 2008

Itanagar, India -- An alternative 450 km road from Odalguri in Assam to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh via Rupa has been made operational for light vehicles for tourist traffic to the border town hosting the 3-day Buddha Mahotsav from November 9.

A 300 metre stretch of the road breached at the Army Dairy near Tenga and another 200 meter at Chuk bridge near Rupa town was washed away in the recent flash flood following cyclone 'Rashmi'.

The Border Roads Organisation has pressed into service hundreds of men and machines to rebuild the Balipara-Tawang road, the vital link to the important Buddhist centre on the Sino-India border used both for civilian and military vehicles.

While Arunachal Chief minister Dorjee Khandu took up the matter with BRO for early restoration before the festival, BRO sources said it might take another week.

External Affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee will attend the inaugural function.

Union Civil Aviation minister Praful Patel and MOS at PMO Pritviraj Chauhan will also participate.
