Ambedkar's statue desecrated in Uttar Pradesh village

The Times of India, Dec 12, 2008

LUCKNOW, India -- A statue of Bhimrao Ambedkar, chairman of the committee that drafted the Indian constitution, was desecrated in Uttar Pradesh's Mau district, the police said Friday.

"A case has been registered against unidentified people, who desecrated the Ambedkar Statue in Machlin village in Mau on Thursday night," police inspector Yashpal Singh said over phone.

The Ambedkar statue was also desecrated about a fortnight back, the police said. Mau is some 250-km from Lucknow.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar was also known as Babasaheb. He was a Buddhist revivalist.

According to police, the incident appears to be the fallout of a land dispute between a section of Buddhist followers and locals.

Several Buddhists Friday took to the streets, demanding strict action against those involved in the incident.

"Taking into account the protest and demonstrations being carried out by the Buddhist followers, security have been strengthened in the village," said Singh.
