Women's peace march for the future of Tibet

ANI, March 13, 2005

Siliguri, India -- The Tibetan Women's Association (TWA) of North Eastern India flagged off a peace march at the Sed. Guyed Institute of Buddhist Studies at Salugasea, near Siliguri recently on the 46th anniversary of the Tibetan National Women's Day.

Women and children from different part of the region are taking part in the peace march that started from Siliguri and will end in Kolkata.

The TWA is calling for an actual and meaningful negotiation on the future of Tibet. The peace march actively seeks support towards the ongoing process of confidence building measures between the Dalai Lama's envoys and the Chinese leadership.

"Women from different part of the northeastern region are participating in the rally. We need peace, stability and prosperity in Tibet. We also need support of the Indian government to solve the problems," said Nina Burma, a member of Tibetan Women's Association(TWA).

"We need respect in Tibet for human rights, we need respect for fundamental rights and above all we need a safe Tibet," said Loksan Champa, a participant in the peace rally.

TWA strongly calls on the Chinese leadership in Beijing to immediately engage in formal negotiation with the Dalai Lama and his envoys and thereby usher in a positive political arrangement in Tibet without further waste of time.
