Public interest litigation for separate Buddhists crematoriums

PTI, Dec 14, 2009

Mumbai, India -- A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court demanding separate crematoriums in the city for followers of Buddhist religion.

The petitioner, Gautam Korde, a Buddhist in his petition has said the Buddhists are forced to use Hindu crematoriums where they are subject to discrimination.

"Hindu priests cannot perform the last rites of Buddhists and in the absence of Buddhist monks in the Hindu crematorium, they (Buddhists) are forced to perform rites themselves," Korde's advocate Sushan Kunjuraman said.

The petition states that in every Hindu crematorium, photographs and idols of Hindu Gods are displayed, which is contrary to the preaching of Buddhism.

The petition would come up for hearing before the High Court in due course.
