Buddhist monk's death: High Court summons CID officer

Sify News, Aug 2, 2010

Mumbai, India -- Bombay High Court on Monday summoned the Deputy Superintendent of Police (CID) who is probing the death of a Buddhist monk which led to riot in suburban Govandi in January 2008.

The division bench of Justices B H Marlapalle and A V Mohta has asked the investigating officer to be present on August 4, after the court was told that no chargesheet has been filed in the case.

Judges said that they would ask the officer himself about progress of investigation.

Bhante Bhadhant Sanghraj (75) was found dead at his house in Govandi in January 6, 2008. His body was found hanging from the ceiling.

Initially, the police had registered a case of suicide. But after finding some injury marks on the body of the deceased, the police filed a murder case.

The monk had reportedly run afoul of a local builder, one A H Lakdawala, after opposing a slum rehabilitation project near his house. Lakdawala arrested in the case is out on bail.

D Nandabodhi, a colleague of the deceased monk, had moved the High Court seeking CBI probe.

"State had earlier said that it would hand over the case to CBI, but no decision was taken on it," said advocate Sanghraj Rupwate, petitioner's lawyer.

Advocate A S Gadkari, public prosecutor, said that CID has completed 80 per cent of the probe.
