"Today the 'Ladakhi Losar' is celebrated in Ladakh and Sikkim but this year as you are aware that Leh was recently affected by floods, so we are not celebrating it on a large scale because of the loss of lives and property caused by floods here," said Kunzang.
'Losar' is a Tibetan word for New Year. 'Lo' means year and 'Sar' means new.
The annual 'Losar', as per the Tibetan calendar, generally commences a week prior to the Gregorian New Year and the celebrations continue till January end.
Heavy showers on August 6 caused by cloudburst triggered flooding and landslides, which washed away hundreds of houses, blocked roads and destroyed bridges in and around Leh town.
