Follow Buddha’s path for peace, welfare: Dalai Lama

Hindustan Times, December 18, 2006

Varanasi, India -- Tibetan Spiritual leader Dalai Lama stressed the need for following the path set by Lord Buddha for the welfare and peace of the world. Each and every human being has to come forward for the fulfillment of this goal, he said.

“I am of the view that the welfare of the world was possible only by following the path shown by Lord Buddha. There is need for India to initiate the role of a world leader with the ideology of Buddha. The world was looking at India with great expectation for the purpose,” he said.

Speaking as the chief guest in a two-day international seminar on Buddhism, organised at Mul Gandh Kuti Vihara in Sarnath on Monday, the Dalai Lama expressed serious concern over the growing tendency of terrorism. He said, “crores of people had been killed with religion as main cause behind it since the second World War. It clearly indicated the ignorance of religion.”

He added, “In 1960 I had initiated to bring Buddhists from across the world on a single platform for the cause of humanity but failed. I have initiated the process again, with the expectation that India would play the role of a world leader for the purpose till 2011.”

“The discard of violence was the real definition of any religion. Moral values and the feeling of humanity and religion together could safeguard human welfare in the world,” he said adding that all religions of the world must come together for establishing an atmosphere of peace and welfare.

The president of the Maha Bodhi Society of India BK Modi presided over the function.

Later, the Dalai Lama released six books in another function organised in the Central Tibetan Institute for Higher Studies and addressed teachers and students of the institute.
