74-year-old Buddhist monk sets himself ablaze

Gaya, India -- A 74-year-old Buddhist monk set himself on fire at the Mahabodhi temple last evening, the police said.

A Bhutanese monk James Lama committed self-immolation at around 8 pm in front of the Mahabodhi tree where Lord Buddha had attained enlightenment.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajwansh Singh said several people rushed to the monk's rescue, but he died before he reached Magadh Medical College Hospital.

"We are investigating the cause of death," Singh said.
