Buddha Purnima observed amid host of activities

Odisha today, May 20, 2008

Bhubaneswar, Orissa (India) -- Orissa Chapter of Mahabodhi Society of India on Monday observed 2252nd birth anniversary of Lord Buddha amid host of cultural and religious activities. This occasion marks three most important events in the life of Lord Buddha-his advent, enlightenment and nirvana, 2,500 years back.

Special prayers offered at the monasteries across the State seeking peace, progress and prosperity of the Buddhist community as well as the nation.

Leader of Opposition, JB Patnaik while attending the function as chief guest throws light on Buddhism and its positive impact on Orissa's way of life. Patnaik said Buddhism and thoughts of Lord Buddha have tremendous influence on Hindu way of life.

"It is spiritual values that bring real beauty, colour and fragrance to human life," the three times Orissa Chief Minister said.

Society's Monk-in-Charge, Saddhatissa Thero spoke on this occasion. Society president and former DGP Amiya Bhusan Tripathy presided over the function and said more and more people seek to return to spiritual values in today's materialistic world.

People from all walks of life - scientists, professors, artists, managers, academicians - are following Buddha's path. "People belonging to different religious backgrounds are showing interest in the study and practice of Buddhism," he added.

Similarly, the Buddhist community celebrated this holy occasion in all monasteries and offices of the Buddhist religious organisations through a day-long programme. The programme includes hoisting of Buddhist religious flag atop all monasteries, recitation of sacred verses from the Tripitak and breaking of fast by the monks.
