Sri Lanka cabinet approval for an International Buddhist Centre

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- The Sri Lankan Cabinet yesterday approved the construction of an International Buddhist Centre in Rajagiriya, a suburb of Colombo.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Religious Affairs and Moral Upliftment.

This Centre will be established with the scope of acting as an Asian centre for propagation of the Theravada Buddhist philosophy overseas, organizing the Buddhist community on a strong institutional background and providing Buddhism and language education for both clergy and laymen..

A land extent of three acres at Nanayakkara Avenue, Gothami Gardens, Rajagiriya has been released to the Sadaham Sevana Trust for building the centre. The construction work will be under the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau. A sum of Rs.43, 843,750.00 has been released to the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Moral Upliftment by the General Treasury to attend to the initial stage of the project.
