'Stop unethical conversions'

JHU News, September 1, 2008

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- A Buddhist Convention was held on last weekend calling upon the authorities to take legal action against the unlawful establishment of Christian churches in various parts of the country. The meeting was convened to alert the Buddhist public to the increasing threat of unethical Christian conversions.

The participants expressed regret that although under the law special permission is required from the relevant local body to establish a church in a predominantly non-Christian area, this law is never properly enforced. President’s Councilor Monohara de Silva was delivered the key lecture about how to take the legal actions against unethical conversions.

Venerable Medagama Dhammananda of the Asgiriya Chapter Kandy, Ven. Thirikunamalaye Ananda, Ven, Dodampahala Siri Suguna, Ven. Hedigalle Wimalasara, JHU Administrative Secretary, Ven. Budugala Jinawansa, Dr. Anula Wijesundera, Dr.Hema Goonathilake and Dr. Rabel were among the participants in the meeting which was chaired by Jagath Sumathipala of the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress.

Several other Buddhist and national organizations were represented at the meeting.
