Sri Lanka celebrates Vesak amid tight security

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- To mark the Vesak festival, several colourful Vesak pandals are on display starting from today in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo and its suburbs despite the heightened security concerns.
Vesak pandals are on display in Dematagoda, Slave Island, Kosgas Handiya, Kelaniya, Pepiliyana Junction, Piliyandala and Mahawa.
A Digital Pandal will be on display at 'Vesak 2009' that is to be held at the BMICH. In addition a large number lanterns are also to be seen in many places.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in Colombo and its suburbs with additional police deployed in view of the Vesak festival.
Vesak which celebrates the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha is an important festival for the majority Buddhists.
