First ever Bodhi sapling ro arrive from Japan

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka -- A Buddhist delegation led by Industrial development Minister Kumara Welgama now on a visit to Japan will return home tomorrow with a Bodhi sapling directly related to the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, gifted by the Buddhists in Japan.

This sapling is an offshoot of the historic Ashtapala Bodhi,
one of the eight first saplings of the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, grown at the Tantirimale Rajamaha Viharaya. This was taken to Japan and transplanted in the precincts of the Agonshu Buddhist temple in Kyoto about 20 years ago.

Director General of Sri Lanka-Agonshu Friendship Foundation Hemasiri Pathirana had taken the initiative to bring down a sapling of this Bodhi to further strengthen the bond of friendship between the two countries.

This Bodhi sapling will be planted at Galapita Viharaya at Gulawita, Matugama. A delegation of Japanese Buddhists led by the Abbot of Agonshu Buddhist temples in Japan Ven.

Seyushi Kiriyama will attend the ceremony marking the planting of the Bodhi sapling at Galapita Viharaya.
