Sunday Times, Feb 14, 2010

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- The Mahanayakes of the Asgiriya and Malwatta chapters and Amarapura and Ramanna Nikayas have asked members of the Buddhist clergy to assemble at the historic Mahamaluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa for a special convention to be held on Thursday February 18 where a resolution pertaining to the present political developments in the country will be passed.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 3.00 pm. In a letter addressed to members of the Maha Sangha the Mahanayakes said that they may be aware that an uncertain situation has arisen in the country with regard to democracy and good governance and added these could have a grave impact on the future of the country.

The letter said that members of the Maha Sangha have always taken the lead in the forward march of the country but this has been subject to some challenges in the recent past.

Hence the Mahanayakes have summoned the special convention where a resolution would be passed to ensure that democracy and good governance are consolidated in the country.

The letter was signed by the Mahanayake of the Malwatte Chapter Most Ven. Thibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangala Thera, Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakhitha Thera, Mahanayake of the Amarapura Chapter Most Ven. Davuldena Gnanissara Thera and Mahanayake of the Ramanna Chapter Most Ven. Weweldeniye Medhalankara Thera.
